Landing party... rig out!

This from LCBethYeah,

Well... I get to thinking... which gets to planning... which can be just plain scary... So... I have plenty of plates and Solo cups. Trust me on this one. And, if you want to do burgers or hot dogs, I have MORE than enough mustard, mayo and relish (long story).
Cap'n ZiPpo:Burgers and dogs sound great! We have two grills and a complete galley aboard. Plan on bring a couple of bucks to defray the cost for food - especially if Lord Spatula concocts some more Train Wreck Stew.

When you do the new post, do you need to include suggestions like lawn chairs?
Cap'n ZiPpo: Aye, bring yer lawn chairs, if'n ye can find room.

Tables of any kind? (I have a card table I can bring.)
Cap'n ZiPpo: Aye, ye bonnie wee lass, at least one card table would help. The ship is short on tables.

Citronella candles? (I have 5 little ones I grabbed on sale.) Coolers? I'm guessing it will be at least partially BYO, right?
Cap'n ZiPpo: Skeeters are so big down here that they wear fur coats and are hunted for their fur. Off or Cutter spray or wipes (with mega doses of DEET) are recommended for hanging out after dark.

How many racks of baby backs should I get in addition to the 4 "racks" of beef ribs? (Upon further thought, I think these are really half racks- they're the same length as a rack of pork ribs, and cows are a lot bigger than pigs, so... ) I was also contemplating some grilled or smoked chicken wings/strips/legs/parts-to-be-named-later with some buffalo sauce (and bleu cheese dressing, of course). Thoughts? Maybe some slaw (cabbage or brocolli)... tater salad is always yum... some Chex mix and chips and (homemade?) salsa for snacking throughout the evening...
Cap'n ZiPpo: Mmmmm, they don't call you the Serving Wench for nothing! Anything you can't bring we can lower a boat davit and row to the local H.E.B. to score.

Also, I had contemplating some of my mom's recipe whiskey slush. You can ask Denita about it. It's yum, to say the least.
Cap'n ZiPpo: Time flies when you're having rum (or whiskey slushes).

Am I stepping on toes? I tend to get a bit... nutty when it comes to organization. Oh, I'm thinking about sending out an invite for the Blogfest steering committee (if you were at the fest, then you're on the committee). Not sure if that will get anyone else there, but we can try, right?
Cap'n ZiPpo: No toes being stepped on at all, little missy. Raise the signal flags to notify the steering committee if'n ye will.

  • Hey, whatever y'all need me to bring, just place an order. I've got a folding table & chair in the trunk already (LAN gaming, always prepared!)

I'll bring some boomsticks and plenty of ammo. I also promised to bring Key LIme Pie shooter drink fixin's.

    Just let me know!

  • Well, at least one of those grills will be full of ribs... just sayin'...

As for the rest of the goodies... let me see what kind of recipes I can come up with.

Doing a little experimentation this evening with baby backs and the JD special sauce. Will let you know what the guinnea pigs have to say about it.

  • Are you guys gonna have room for a batch of Train Wreck Stew™?

By Blogger Lord Spatula I, King & Tyrant, at 5:05 PM

  • OF COURSE there will be room for Train Wreck Stew™!!!!

By Blogger Beth, at 5:09 PM

  • Beth, I can bring another grill and some coolers if needed. I also have a gas cooker if we need to boil or heat up anything in a pot. As far as food or other supplies go, there's an HEB about a stone's throw from Zippo's ship.

  • Dash... coolers might not be a bad idea (I have one. I think ZiPpo has one.) As for the grill... hmmm... if it's not too much of a problem... I'm quite the over-plan person. I'd rather have more than we need than not enough- KWIM? And Spats might be interested in the gas cooker for the Train Wreck Stew™. I'll ask.

As for the baby back experiment last night... major success. They prefer St. Louis or spare cuts over baby backs, though. Oh, well...

  • YIKES. I just talked to the butcher. The beef ribs he sells are a pound PER RIB. (I... uh... used one pack of ribs, so I'm going to replace those... ) Dang... a pound per RIB??? So... we may not need as many sides as I had originally thought... I need to think...

  • Dang... a pound per RIB???

That's enough for me.  What're y'all gonna eat? (grin)

  • I'll bring a grill. Sounds like we might need it for those brontosaurus ribs. Let me know what else we need - I live about 20 minutes from Zippo's forecastle. How many folks are we expecting? Anybody know?

By Blogger Dash, at 7:54 PM

  • My best guess is 100 guests, and 85% will crap out on us! So, 15? Hmmmm. Will everyone listed on the crew list confirm? I know Cap, Dash, LC Beth, and of course, Lord Spatula (and probable guest) are fer sures. Denita Two Dragons too, and Lords knows, I hope all on the crew list show up. It will be way too much fun for just a dozen or so!

By Blogger ZiPpo, at 10:43 AM

  • I'm coming.  Don't know about the guest, though.  May be too much to ask of her to conform to the schedule I'm figuring on (leave straight from work, return Monday).

By Blogger Lord Spatula I, King & Tyrant, at 5:30 AM

  • We need to add Martin to the guest list. (Do y'all remember him from the blogmeet? Great guy.) At least we got one more person from the Evite I sent out. And don't forget about AJ- I'll bring him along with me.

I'm still doing the math for the ribs, etc. If we do brontosaurus ribs, I was thinking about JUST doing burgers (and dogs, if anyone wants them) OR spare ribs, NOT both. Too much charred animal? Just a thought.

Or maybe I should just go to HEB and see how to the cooking muse moves me.

Oh, yeah. Hubby is probably coming down at some point in the weekend- either Saturday night after work or Sunday morning for the range time.

  • There is no such thing as too much charred animal flesh. Cook it all! We'll somehow manage!
